Background: Character Wiki

Personality:

THIS WILL BE PACKED WITH SPOILERS FOR DANGAN RONPA V3

Rantaro's memories are what he believes them to be, and he died assuming they were all real. The canon itself leaves a lot of questions as to the validity of any of them, as the story implies that everyone in the killing game has almost entirely implanted memories, so I will be describing Rantaro as he knows himself.

Rantaro Amami is Cool Guy - friendly, collected, stylish, and handsome.

When Kaede, the initial protagonist, is introduced to him he's already gone quite a ways to gather information and get his bearings in the game. He's done this to a point that makes him appear both mysterious and possibly dangerous, as it seems his charm might be hiding a greater knowledge. A feat really, as the very first time Kaede meets him he also informs her that he has absolutely no memory of his "Ultimate" ability, meaning he doesn't know what special talent he has that qualifies him to be a part of the group. It's hard to tell if this is a lie though, as he acts incredibly glib about it - which is probably his defining outward character trait. Even in a situation where he doesn't know why he's been kidnapped, or why he doesn't remember important information about himself, he doesn't even approach panic, instead logically polling everyone in the building to gain a better understanding of himself and the situation.

As we find out later, his apparent calm is at least in part due to the fact that unlike the others, he's received a small bit of special information from the game-runners that informs him both that he's in a killing game, and that he should be careful who to trust. This is important, because even given this information he doesn't seclude himself away and trust no one, as many might in that scenario, but instead takes that advice to prompt becoming friendly with as many people as possible to work out who he can trust.

Rantaro is very logical and insightful, but has no interest in using these skills to take a leadership role. Instead planting information casually and carefully in conversation in a way that spurs others to thought or action while he continues his own private investigation and observation of the situation. In this way he is both a team player and very self reliant. Unfortunately, this desire to privately explore his hunches leads to his death, when he very early in the games gets far too close to the real mastermind of their situation, and is killed in the process.

Beyond the settings of the killing game, Rantaro believes himself to be an explorer and a sailor, traveling the world to find his lost younger sisters. This view of himself, and these likely implanted memories, make him brotherly and protective, very interested in escaping the game so he can continue the search for his family.

Generally Rantaro is a very confident person, even when being casually self-effacing, so it's of note that when the subject of his sisters is brought up, his confidence plummets, as he blames himself for their losses and kidnappings. In fact, Rantaro is of the impression that he lost, one by one, twelve sisters, all over the world. He blames himself for this, and it's the only time he seems to be completely illogical - believing there is a chance that he can find them all again if he just looks hard enough.

Though this belief speaks to a greater optimism that Rantaro shows at almost every turn - in his continued efforts to save his sisters, his attempts to beat an unbeatable killing game, and even an excitement to remember his Ultimate ability. Rather than worry that he'll never remember, Rantaro is anxious to learn more about himself, believing that he certainly will even though he has no evidence to support that. So despite the unlikelihood that he'll ever find even one of his sisters, it makes sense that he believes he can.

This brotherly instinct and experience also makes him gentle, in one instance offering to paint Kaede's nails, which he's actually quite good at. This sort of behavior brings the people around him to generally assume he has a girlfriend, though he only vaguely denies this and refers to him having these skills due to family. He also denies being a flirt or a womanizer, despite how he says others tend to see him, most likely due to his tendency towards fashion and his cool demeanor. Not that any of these accusations offend him, and he always pleasantly dismisses them with no further explanation.

Ultimately, Rantaro is a good, quiet, well meaning guy. While it's possible that had he lived longer he may have grown desperate to escape the game to save his family, at the time of his death he had only been kind and helpful, his only desire being to end the killing game once and for all to save his loved ones and everyone involved.

Abilities: It's very possible he has no natural skills at all, but in his fabricated ideas of himself he's a skilled sailor, a seasoned and competent traveler, and above average at self preservation. Because these skills are essentially a placebo though, they don't always come through in practice, despite him believing them to be true.

Alignment: Sosyne. Rantaro is practically defined by his chill. He's mild toned, friendly, and even when faced with dangerous and unknown situations, remains almost unnaturally calm. He can get a little cagey when he feels like people are pushing too hard too fast, but is very difficult to anger.

Other: None.
